The Equinoctial Technological University (UTE) and the Agency for Regulation and Control of Biosafety and Quarantine for Galapagos (ABG) of the Ministry of Environment formalized, on May 17, an inter-institutional cooperation framework agreement. This is an initiative carried out by the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Industries. The objective of the agreement is to concentrate efforts and institutional capacities to carry out projects and activities of research, technical advice and links with society on issues related to biosafety of the islands. For the signing of the agreement, which will be valid for two years, authorities from both institutions were present. The Rector of the UTE, Ricardo Hidalgo Ottolenghi, stressed the importance of these agreements to promote academic research towards society. "We hope to strengthen laboratory development and research activities through a scientific contribution from the university to consolidate modern diagnostic techniques that allow us to evaluate diseases or pests that put the Galapagos Islands at risk," said Myrian Cruz, Executive Director of the ABG The execution of the agreement will be through letters of intent or specific agreements that will be signed for each project to be developed. For this, both institutions assigned responsible for following up on the proposals. In the case of the UTE, the person in charge will be Luis Ramos, researcher and teacher of the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences. Based on previous conversations, Ramos explains that they already have two projects that would be implemented immediately. The first would be a determination of contaminants in food to assess the presence of mycotoxins, antibiotics and growth promoters that may affect the island's balance. "This project is a short-term proposal since both institutions have the equipment to implement the processes," he added. The other project would involve the UTE providing advice on the implementation of rapid diagnostic techniques for plant pests, animal diseases, and food contaminants for quality control of agricultural inputs. #letsguide #chile
