L.A. PRODUCCIONES (03/26/2020)
Built in the years 1634 and 1655. The building dates from the seventeenth century modified in its original form due to different earthquakes that occurred in the city, it has a facade with Doric shaft columns, the temple is built on a plan of a Latin cross, with its Romanesque style, which highlights its structure by the central nave and the vaulted arms. The upper body of the nave has columns of Ionic capital. The base is made of continuous stone, they have a good harmony between the proportions of height and space, the temple as a whole is a delusion of art, outside there are two bell towers with a domed finish. Inside the building, the convent block is projected with two-story cladding arranged in a box with a basin and gardens in the center. The urban architecture of the city, with diverse styles and lack of definition of some, causes a great contrast with colonial architecture, in addition to the physical loss of real estate from previous periods and its replacement by dissonant buildings. The temple represents the stage of the conquest and evangelization of the religious orders of the central highlands and the stage of independence. Address The Santo Domingo church is located on Av. Juan Abel Echeverría. Santo Domingo Church Highlights • A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, patron saint of earthquakes, erected in 1,690 by General Luís Sotomayor y Pimentel, remains as the main church. The mural paintings inside were worked by Brother Enrique Mideros. • This church plays an important role in the history of the city of Latacunga, since it was within it that the Latacungueños patriots met to declare the independence of their city, from the Spanish yoke. • This declaration was made on November 11, 1820, this date is the most important for the city of Latacunga. Legend Raised in the years 1634-35, it originally had a single tower and the shape of a cross, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, patron saint of earthquakes, erected in 1690 by her devotee, General Luis Sotomayor y Pimentel, precisely that building It endures as a main church. The mural paintings in the interiors of the sanctuary were made by Brother Enrique Mideros. The adjoining square, called the eleventh of November, testified to the heroic deed of 1820, when the patriots in supreme attempt, crossed the realistic Los Andes barracks, jubilantly proclaimed the Independence of Latacunga. Urbanistically Santo Domingo in 1600 included one of the 9 sectors in which the city was divided, in which each one had as its center a church and a convent. For the 18th century, it also included one of the five sectors of the city. Its colonial construction dates back to 1635 with a single tower and the logical Latin cross shape, it also had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. In later years, when damaged by telluric movements, the central nave that remained standing received the construction of two towers with eight arches each.
