In 2015, an Oak tree approximately 150 years old won the "European Tree of the Year" competition. Many of the competitors from that year were much more majestic and long-lived trees, but this one in particular left a curious anecdote for the Estonians. It was a beautiful oak tree, located in the immediate vicinity of the sports ground of Orissaare, a coastal town on the island of Saaremaa. In 1951, the decision was made to expand the facilities to incorporate a soccer field, which was just intended to be placed where the oak was located. It was a good tree and it was painful, but as a solution, it could only be uprooted to continue the work. The people of the Orissaare were not entirely happy, but finally, the decision was approved. They say that first a tractor and then two tractors helped by metal cables could not knock it down, it was taken as a signal but also, the soccer field was built ... but with the tree in the middle !! Since then the inhabitants of Orissaare have become accustomed to playing with it, counting it as one more element of the playing field, they consider it a very special oak.
