The Ascension Church of the Assumption of the Lord, imitating the Byzantine style, with a five-tower, Greek cross-shaped masterpiece, was built in 1873 by Riga architect Heinrich Scheel. The church's five bells, the largest of which weighed 48 pounds (786 kg), were donated to the church by Emperor Alexander II The first Estonian priest of the congregation was Nikolai Poska, who served in the church from 1895 to 1898. Nikolai Poska was the brother of Jaan Poska, the signer of the Tartu Peace Treaty.
