The Otepää Maarja Lutheran Church represents one of the 21st Century Discoveries in South Estonia , marked by the National Geographic Yellow Window, and is recommended for visiting cultural and historic travelers. Otepää Maarja Lutheran Church is historically linked to the national flag of Estonia. On June 4, 1884, a blue-black-and-white flag of the Estonian Students Society, which later became the national flag and in 1991 the national flag of the Republic of Estonia, was consecrated in the church pastor's building. The church is in a new Gothic style, the altar painting "Christ on the Cross" dates back to 1880, the Kessler Ordeal from 1853.
