On December 11, 1914, the Seville City Council chaired by the Marquis of Torrenueva, Carlos de la Lastra Romero, ratified the transfer of a 240,000 square meter plot to establish a military air base on the western edge of the municipality, on the other side from the municipal racecourse. The consistory favored the adaptation works with 15,000 pesetas in cash in addition to the construction of a dock on the river bank, whose channel through Los Gordales (current grounds of the April Fair) had not yet been diverted. Colonel Pedro Vives Vich's choice of the dehesa de Tablada as the location of the air base for the Spanish Army had its roots in Seville's Aviation Week held between March and April 1910. That festival was a success despite of bad weather and unanimously considered the start of aviation in Seville.
