Until 1744 the soldiers were welcomed in private houses and as of that year it was the convent of San Francisco which served for this work. Finally the construction of the headquarters of Prince Alfonso on the sound in which the convent of San Domingos was destroyed in the attack of Francis Drake of 1589, located between the field of the Road and the field of the Firewood was decided. The works, led by Lieutenant Colonel of the body of engineers Joaquin Montenegro, began on July 11, 1859 and ended in 1864. However, the official pavilions were not built. The capacity was of 1800 soldiers, arriving at 2400 in case of necessity. In the early years of the 20th century, the first A Coruña aerodrome was installed at the barracks, but the construction of a large radio telegraphy antenna ended with this possibility. After changing the name to the headquarters of Alfonso XII, in 1931 he received the name of Atocha barracks.

Actually the barracks does not tell me more, than the fact that in January 1991, I entered here to perform military service and especially because I did it in the COE. This review is a reminder to all those comrades and commanders that I had at the time and who are now my friends and brothers, for ties as strong as invisible for the rest. Those with whom I shared the day to day, that marked my character and left an eternal imprint in my memory. The pride of being Boina Verde, of putting honor above all, to Spain and its people. Thanks to all the Green Berets for being part of this great family and teaching me the true value of friendship, companionship, dedication, struggle, overcoming, unity and strength.
