Julio Galán, 1911.
Plaza de María Pita, 12
It condenses in its architecture the essence of the glass city. The curly cornice, the Mudejar-inspired glazed ceramics and the balconies of the Wonem-burger foundry make it a real dollhouse for Marineda's princesses, adorned on their balconies with headdresses of gardenias and palms.
Its portal, in the Plaza de María Pita, transports us to the English clubs, adorned with peacocks that protect their inhabitants and remember the desire of lovers.
Chocolate was another of the exotic products that ships brought from the Indies and other colonies to the port of A Coruña. Chocolatiers from that time are still open to the public in Riego de Agua, Lugo Square and San Andrés streets. Hence the popular name that calls the people of Coruña "cascarilleiros", alluding to the cocoa shell, whose smell scented the streets.
Casa Rey (1911-13), between Praza maior de María Pita, 12 and Avenida la Marina, in Coruña (Galiza). According to the modernist project -Art-Nouveau- and of 'crystal architecture', by the Asturian architect Julio Galán González-Carvajal (Avilés, 1875 - Uviéu, 1939), municipal architect of Coruña (1901-11) and Uviéu (1911-21) , introducer of modernism in Galiza. Curly cornice with intricate details, Mudejar-inspired glazed ceramics, A Coruña white galleries and balconies with ironworks from the now-defunct A Coruña art foundry of the Alsatian family of Wonenburger (1888-1984), female busts of caryatids. The portal and the interior with its doors and lamps, irons and glazed or not glass, that take us to a splendid time for architecture, which unfortunately will never return.
