María Pita, A Coruña heroine

Statue of Maria Pita
Mayor Fernández de la Cámara y Pita, popularly known as María Pita, is the undisputed protagonist of the history of Coruña. A demanding and determined woman, she was married and widowed four times; and they say that she did not get married a fifth time because her last husband demanded it in her will.
It was the year 1589, Sir Francis Drake, a privateer in the British navy, besieged A Coruña as punishment for his support of the "Invincible Armada", sent a year earlier by the Spanish King against England.
After long days of fierce fighting and intense fire, the population took refuge and offered resistance behind the walls of the Old City. Women and children collaborate as much as men. Doors, windows, mattresses, anything goes to close the gaps. But tragically the enemy manages to open a large access gap. Faced with fatigue and the large number of dead and wounded, the city believes it is succumbing.
It is then that María Pita, advancing with a pike, knocks down and kills the English lieutenant by snatching his flag. At the sight of this heroism, the despondent spirits of the people of A Coruña are transformed, throwing themselves enraged at the enemies who rush to flee.
The statue of the famous Spanish heroine María Mayor Fernández de Cámara y Pita who became the symbol of the triumphal defense of the city against the invasion of the English army in 1589. It seems that at the height of the battle, when it seemed that the British had broken through the enemy lines , a young woman shot down an English soldier and the flag he was trying to plant. From that moment the legend of Maria Pita was born.
Sublime. Every good Spaniard should piss in the direction of England.
A beautiful square, one of the best that the city has. Maria Pita heroine of the city. The city hall is impressive.
