The Torre da Berenguela is the powerful and architecturally masterful bell tower of the cathedral. It is located at the side entrance.
Fabrizio Parodi (11/06/2018)
The correct name would be Torre de la Berenguela (the Berenguela would be the name of the bell), also known as the Clock Tower, owes its name to Berenguel de Landoria, the one who finished it. Built in the fourteenth century, initially had only defensive function, only in the seventeenth century were built the two upper bodies to decorate it, the clock will come only later in 1831, built on the four facades of the tower, its peculiarity consists in having only a needle which counts the minutes, while the hours are signaled by the already mentioned Berenguela bell, which together with the smaller bell of the quarters, mark the passage of time for the happiness of the inhabitants of Santiago.nThose currently mounted on the tower are replicas, replaced in 1990 for problems of cracks that affect the sound, the originals can be found in the cloister of the Cathedral accessible through the Museum.
