An impressive place, with a lot of history to discover.
It is a very beautiful place. Despite going in summer, late in the afternoon, there was a good temperature especially in the final part and towards the river.nIn Spring and Autumn it must be a spectacular landscape.nIt is not so much for the ruins as for the environment.nThe path is very easy, a bit stony at the end and difficult to access that section with a normal vehicle because of the slope.nFor a walk it is ideal.
It is a necropolis of tombs carved out of granite rock, it is debated whether they are of Roman origin, as the large stone with two sepulchers and a double Latin inscription seems to indicate. Remains of different sanctuaries are appreciated, it also has two tombs of a father and a daughter. The area is declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
The path to access is complicated, constantly full of stones. In addition, they should indicate where the main monuments to visit are. A plan would be a good idea, since a poster indicated the presence of funeral steles with pre-Roman and Roman inscriptions, as well as a tomb that kept its cover; or I also read the existence of a boar. Well none of that I could see. I found various tombs drilled in the granite, and the tower and what remains of the castle; but it was a shame that he couldn't find the rest.nFurthermore, I read that the necropolis has been and is continually being plundered.nIt is truly a shame that it is so abandoned. It is useless to say that something is a BIC if it is later left to its fate.
The place impresses, first for its natural beauty and then for the archaeological site for which this site is famous.nnMalamoneda is located in Hontanar (Toledo) and is currently a small depopulated area consisting mainly of a necropolis and military structures corresponding to the Hispano-Roman, Visigoth, Muslim, high and low medieval Christian stages. Scattered remains of paleolithic lithic industry on quartzite have also been found, related to both the deposits of the Cedena River and the Malamoneda Stream.nnThe site at first sight draws attention, as we can see more than 100 possibly Roman granite sarcophagi spread throughout the entire area. The existence of at least two votive funeral epigraphs of the Roman type, with inscriptions of their bidders, sculpted in a granitic bolus. A dominant tower sectioned as matacans of medieval chronology between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, to which belongs a superior reconstruction, attached to all the depopulated that is still preserved in the form of a farm and full of scrap, dirt and scattered items around.
