Garcia Barbón statue
Juan Jesus Mendez Souto (04/12/2019)
Although it has been moved several times and it is not a striking monument, it seems very important to keep it in the area since for many decades it has been part of the image of the street. It is true that some will say that it is not beautiful or modern. Although it is only a statue of Don García Barbón, it is part of the history of Vigo.

The Monument to José García Barbón is located in a roundabout on Isaac Peral Street (half of García Barbón Avenue) to which he was transferred not long ago, since formerly it was at the beginning of García Barbón Avenue, just at the end of Alfonso XIII and very close to the emblematic church of Santiago de Vigo.nnThe García Barbón Monument is made of granite and bronze and was inaugurated in 1927. Its author is Francisco Asorey, sculptor born in Cambados and author of several works in our city, such as Eduardo Cabello as well as several works on his land native.nnThe olive city owes much to García Barbón (also a street name) after his return from Cuba with a great fortune made generous donations such as the Public Library, the popular School of Arts and Crafts, where most sculptors of our city and the García Barbón Theater, now called the Caixanova Cultural Center, where theatrical and cultural performances are made.nCredit Note to Sasa72 in MiNube.

José García Barbón (n. Verín; March 30, 1831 - f. Vigo; March 7, 1909) was a well-known businessman and patron of his time.nnFrom a wealthy family, he soon emigrated to Cuba where he would achieve business success, founding his own bank. There he met another Galician emigrant and businessman, Policarpo Sanz, with whom he maintained a great friendship throughout his life. Together they were the promoters of the Society of Charity of the Naturals of Galicia and the Galician Center of Havana.nnAt 53 years of age he decided to return to his homeland for health reasons. In Verín he founded the Hotel Balneario de Cabreiroá and the Electra de Verín. After ten years, he decided to settle permanently in Vigo with his sister and his four nephews, since he remained single. There he devoted himself to buying properties, erecting large buildings such as the Theater of his name or the School of Arts and Crafts of Vigo, and to charity works.nnHe lived in his mansion on the Vista Alegre estate (located next to the current García Barbón avenue, in Vigo) until his death in 1909. His funeral was massive. He is buried in the Pereiró cemetery in Vigo.nnWikimedia Commons houses a multimedia category about José García Barbón.
