The parish church of Santa María de Benassal would be conformed after the Christian conquest of the town or, at the latest, in 1239, when its charter was granted. Nothing remains of the medieval temple, it was completely rebuilt in the seventeenth century, with its facade dated in 1677.nThe church, as part of the town, was very damaged in the Civil War, when Benasal was bombed by the Francoists in 1938. The reconstruction took a few years, as the temple was not reopened to the public until 1965.nInside the magnificent and personal «Last Supper» (1968), in iron, by the sculptor José Gonzalvo Vives (1929-2010), also author of the Assumption of the niche of the cover and the set hanging from the southern wall of the church that commemorates the granting of its charter.
