The oldest stadium in Meqele, that use to be public is now under Mekelle University. It has been playing a vital role in satisfying the needs of the young and those who love the sport game. Some years ago Mekelle University took is from the City Municipalty and now its under constraction. In addition to football matches, it entertains other public gatherings like Ashenda.

Mekelle Stadium or BALONI is the oldest stadium In Mekelle city. It used to be owned by the city administration (should not be confused with the new and bigger “Tigray Stadium”. In recent years Mekelle University purchased the property and is going under heavy expansion and maintenance. Currently the stadium is on its final construction stage. Recently the stadium hosted ASHENDA 2018 (2010 Ethiopian calender) festival.
