Vocational training at SELAM There is an international restaurant on the grounds of Children's Village. Everything you can enjoy here comes from own cultivation and own production. In the kitchen, the cooks are trained. Here too the consistent concept and the offered quality are convincing. We were allowed to convince ourselves. At your own request, we visit another location of SELAM in Addis. We travel with others from Children's Village to the Vocational Center. Again, we marvel at the dimension of the terrain. We are guided through all training workshops and training rooms. There are many opportunities for young people to have a sound vocational education. Amongst others, secretaries, locksmiths, car mechanics, electricians, construction workers and carpenters are trained. Here we find a lot of things that SELAM itself needs for its children's villages. Stones for building houses, windows, roof racks, pumps, beekeeping supplies, school benches. But there are also commissioned work. We see containers for container vehicles, children's slides for playgrounds and a hull made of steel, vibrating machines for the production of stones and threshing machines for agriculture. The training workshops remind me strongly of my vocational training as a mechanical engineer. There are several workshops with workbenches and machine cabinets with machines for exciting metalworking, welding workshops and a modern car workshop. In addition to cars, trucks will be repaired soon. Since February there is a cooperation with VOLVO. After I get interested in who designs the finished products and draws the necessary drawings, we visit the design department. I'm surprised how professionally I work here. There is a well-equipped open plan office with several CAD workstations. Nothing here reminds us of a developing country. You can certainly work here on a European level, provided that you develop appropriate skills and experience. But the basic requirements are given. Anyone who has undergone this training from SELAM will be able to provide themselves and his family with a good living here in Ethiopia. With this impression we leave SELAM. SELAM is a prime example of how development aid can work effectively.
