Beautiful monument. It is hard to take pictures of it, though.

Meyazia 27 Square is the official name of what is popularly known as Arat Kilo, a name that applies both to the square and the surrounding district of the city of Addis Ababa. The monument at the heart of the Square commemorates the victory over the fascist Italian invaders, and the struggle that preceded it (Meyazia 27 on the Ethiopian Calendar, May 5th on the Gregorian Calendar, is both the day that Addis Ababa was occupied by the Fascists, as well as the day that Emperor Haile Selassie returned to his capital in triumph exactly 5 years later). The original monument included a relief of the Emperor Haile Selassie holding the flag of Ethiopia, which was altered during the rule of Mengistu Haile Mariam into a representation of a guerrilla fighter holding flag. Due to its proximity to the Menelik Palace, residence of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian Parliament Building, Arat Kilo is often used as a metonym for the Ethiopian government. King George VI is the road on which the National Museum is situated, so one can have a quick stop at this Monument.

I love this city because of so much diversity in the scenery.

Meyazia 27 Victory Square is a traffic circle and historic landmark in the incredible neighborhood of ‘Arat Kilo’. Miazia 27 in Ethiopian Calendar (which is equivalent to May 5th) represents both the day when Addis Ababa fell to Italy in 1936 and was liberated in 1941. The monument at the center of this Square honors the patriots’ fight against fascist Italian invaders, and the victory gained. The monument consists of an obelisk and a relief figure. The obelisk, topped by a Lion of Judah, stands at the center while the relief figure, of Emperor Haile Selassie holding the national flag, encircled the oblisk. This intersection is surrounded by various significant places like buildings of Ministry of Education, the Parliament, Office of the Prime Minister, the Palace, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Science College of Addis Ababa University, Menelik II High School and Berhan Ena Selam Printing Press
