Deresgie Mariam

These absolutely stunning artifacts can be found at the church of Deresege Mariam in the northern region of Gonder, #Ethiopia. Just a small look at the many hidden gems in the @Landoforigins. Deresgie Mariam is situated near the southern edge of the sloping plateau of Janamora, the church of Dresge Maryam is known for its significant role in shaping the nation's history of the modern era. The bell castle was built by Ras Wube of the Semein, for a planned coronation of himself as emperor of Ethiopia. However, just 2 days prior to the scheduled ceremony, on Feb 9, 1855, the Ras was defeated & captured by his rival, Ras Kassa Hailu of Qwara at the battle of Deresge. And 2 days later, on Feb 11, 1855, Ras Kassa was anointed & crowned emperor of Ethiopia in the church of Deresge Maryam. From this point on, Ras Kassa Hailu became Dagmawi Tewodros; marking the end of Zemene mesafint ('the Era of Princes'), and the beginning of reunified nation.

I was living here for a couple of decades; of course born and raised here. The Blessed Virgin Mary & St. Mercurius (Philopater) tabernacles along with other saints are found here. January 21st (ጥር 21) and Feb. 2nd (ጥር 25) are the most celebrated annual feasts; nobody stays home at those days.
