Asheton Maryam Monastery

Astonishing view from 3200m and good mountain view

Worth the hike to the top. Amazing scenery. A very peaceful place.

If you are fit enough for an authentic adventure, Asheton Maryam is the place. The monastery is situated on top of a hill. Although most of the journey can be accessed by either a car or a mule, the last couple of meters are only accessible with foot. The view is breathtaking. I would recommend to see this place in late September or October most of the landscape is green. Also I would recommend a shoes with good grip as the road is narrow and steep. If you are in Lalibela, it is a must see.

Fyi cost is now 350birr as of September 2019. Very beautiful monestary and church carved into top of mountain. It's about a 2 hour walk from town. Not particularly difficult, just lose rock and stone on road.

Definitely worth hiking up here for the views; you don't need a guide just follow the locals walking up. It's a safe path or you can walk the road. If you want to enter the Monastery, it's a steep 350 Birr...
