Bete Abba Libanos

The red colour of this rock church is impressive and aesthetic to the eyes of the tourist. Entrance is grand from outside but simple inside with nothing much left.

Biete Abba Libanos is an underground rock-cut monolith Orthodox church located in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It was built during the Kingdom of Axum. It is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site at Lalibela.

Hewn into a rock face, Bet Abba Libanos is unique among Lalibela’s churches because only the roof and floor remain attached to the strata.

The series of churches brings wonder to your mind on how people could have devised and organized such construction hundreds of years ago with a chisel and hammer. The size is astonishing.
