Debre Libanos

Does 'The Lord of the Rings, by Tolkien' was based on Debre Libanos? Debre Libanos (ደብረ ሊባኖስ) is a monastery in Ethiopia, lying about 100 km Northwest of Addis Ababa. Originally founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. The monastery sits in a valley, one of the tributaries of the Nile river, surrounded by a chain of mountains. You will be thrilled by the arrangement of the canyons? The area is one of the best places in the world favored for Paragliding and Hang Gliding. The monastery is a huge complex consisting of compounds covering a large area: the main church building and compound; a large museum full of antiquities; a community of monks and novices; several religious schools; the cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot lived and prayed; hundreds of pilgrimages travelling to the monastery for various purposes; and communities dwelling around the church. There is large area of cemetery where renowned church figures and people from all corners of the country were buried. None of the original buildings of Debre Libanos survived due to several and repeated blows from various attackers including the invasion of Ahmad Gragn. The current church building, standing over the tomb of Saint Tekle Haymanot, was constructed by Emp. Haile Selassie in 1961. Though minor excavation attempts were made , discoveries were made and ancient objects were found. For instance, it was told that a fragment of the True Cross is preserved in the monastery (David Buxton). During an excavation of a small area of the monastery, one ring with an inscription on it was found. The ring was a beautiful gold ring with marks. The inscription on the ring appeared and is tied to the earlier story of the monastery. The ring was delivered to Emperor Menelik II.
