The Subregional Office for Eastern Africa and FAO Representation to AU and UNECA covers nine countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda, with a total population of about 221.1 million in 2014. Many of the people living in the region are engaged in food and agricultural production, mainly as small holder farmers and pastoralists. In all, it is estimated that the agricultural sector is the main source of livelihoods and income in the subregion.
