Église Saint Maixent de Verrines (Romane)

The entrance from the west side offers a gable facade dating from the 19th century. Built to protect the remains of the church, it is of no particular interest. But going back to the bedside along the north wall and the old cemetery (classified as a historic site) is to discover a Romanesque beauty with rich sculpted decorations. The Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion had spared this early 12th century church. But the revolution of 1789 almost made it disappear. Confiscated as a national asset, it was sold to the mayor of the town who turned it into a stone quarry. The primitive facade and the nave disappeared, only the east span of the nave, the transept and the choir survived, bought twice, and offered in 1840 to the parish factory. A superb restoration allows visitors to appreciate this remarkable building. The remains of this church so richly carved can only regret the disappearance of its western part. Visible 365 days a year, the opening of the doors is managed by an automatic system, it is an excellent complement to the discovery of the collegiate church of Celles-sur-Belle.
