Super basilica, place of quiet and peaceful prayer. This basilica deserves to be better known.

The origin of a first sanctuary to Tourailles 8th century where there was a monastery and a small shrine dedicated to Mary, but with the Norman invasions, both buildings are devastated. With the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911, Viking invaders are allowed to settle in the area and after the baptism of their leader, they rebuild places of worship they had destroyed earlier. The church of Tourailles then rises from the ashes ... The legend indicates that it was during this reconstruction that a statue of the Virgin was found buried underground to protect it from looting by the Vikings. Therefore, crowds of pilgrims flock to Tourailles to venerate Mary under the title of Our Lady of Recouvrance. The most famous episode of Tourailles takes place at the beginning of the 17th century when Isaac and Marthe Eudes made a pilgrimage there because they were unable to have children. Soon after was born who was to become St. John Eudes, who also had two brothers and four sisters ... The success of the pilgrimage will continue to grow to reach 15,000 pilgrims a year in the late 19th century. Having become too small and dilapidated, the priest and the inhabitants of the village decided to destroy the old church to rebuild a new one. Work began in 1895, the inauguration took place in 1903, the consecration in 1932 the total completion in 1935, or 40 years. The old church was demolished in 1903. A stone cross in 1643 planted in the middle of the lawn is the only remnant of the old cemetery surrounding the church. The statue of Mary (or Our Lady of Recouvrance) was crowned in 1939.
