The pike is a spindle-shaped fish, the sides of which are greenish or yellowish towards the back become white towards the belly. The fins are red-orange in color and have dark stripes. Its size in adulthood varies from 30 to 110 cm and its weight between 2 and 10 kg. However individuals over 130 cm and over 30 kg exist but are less frequent (they are generally females). In France, no less than 7 pikes ranging from 135 cm to 140 cm were caught1. The current record for the largest pike approved by the International Association of Sport Fishing is a specimen of 147 cm (58 cm around the belly) for 31 kg, caught in 1983 in Germany, nicknamed Hecht (pike in German). The largest pike ever measured and confirmed (152 cm long, 60 cm belly, 28 kg) was captured and released in May 2004 in Lake Apisko, Manitoba (Canada). A few writings dated to the end of the 19th century also report the net capture of giant pike (173–175 cm long, 67–68 cm wide, 41-42 kg) in Ireland2, writings whose veracity is doubtful due to lack of evidence material and because no giant pike has been caught since (more than 50 years). Young pike have yellow bands along the body which later divide into light dotted lines. The color patterns on the flanks vary from one individual to another, but no clear link has yet been established with his living environment. In Italy, Esox cisalpinus was long considered a color variation of the northern pike, but was recognized as a species in its own right in 2011. This fish has about 500 teeth4. In northern pike, 5 sensory pores are visible under its lower mandibles5 compared to 6 to 9 in muskellunge and 4 pores in chain pickerel6. Only the upper part of the gill covers is scaly while the whole of those of chain pickerel is covered with scales. A hybrid between northern pike and muskellunge is sometimes seen where the two species co-exist. Its livery is reminiscent of the muskellunge but some features (shape of the tail in particular) are intermediate. Some of these hybrids have been introduced to other places for sport fishing. It is likely that northern pike will also naturally hybridize with chain pike.
