After the War of 1870, the Grand Etat Major decided to fortify the area around Paris. In the eastern part of the massif, a set of fortified structures is built, forming part of the second belt protecting the capital, the Trou de l'Enfer fort, as well as five batteries occupying an area of ​​50 hectares in the forest. The set today has been backfilled to become a picnic site, we only distinguish the slopes from the edges of the battery. In addition there is an information panel on the battery and military works of the region.
