Unsafe and dirty place.

I was at Barbès station. It was winter at 7pm. The cars was crowded of lonly people. When the doors open, they ran hurriedly and bumped into each other. The faster they accelerated, the less time was left. So, I saw a face that caught my attention. It was the only one there that seemed peaceful. But when I went to shoot him, he put his hand in front of the lens and said: Pas de photos, mon ami. Others like him joined in and stared at me. I decided to walk away. Then he warned: C'est l'Afrique, pas Paris.

This place gets such a bad reputation but it really isn't that bad. Yes it is dominated by males mostly of North African origin but I can say as an English female travelling alone they never bother me in the slightest. This place isn't the romanticized and white-washed Paris that tourists flock to see, rather it is real Paris and a legacy of colonialism and housing policies that encourage segregation.

A little scary in the day and much more so in the night. I've been through here many times but never a pleasant experience. I’ve seen, with my own eyes, things going down in this station, so I would say unless you know the area well, be accompanied or avoid, especially at night. Needs more police.
