The Church of Saint Martin is a religious building of the Catholic faith built in the town of Barentin. Several churches have followed one another on this site. The first, little known, was probably made of wood. The second, of Romanesque style, was built in 1731. Victim of a fire in 1756, it was restored in 1769. During the Revolution, the church was closed (1793), and all the bells sent to the foundry except a. In Year III, 70 beds were installed there to accommodate a detachment of the Public Order. The church also served as a meeting room for the City Council. In 1802, the Catholic cult was re-established. But with the industrialization of the city, the church became too small. The cemetery near the church was closed and moved to its current location (1832) and the church demolished in 1853. Everything was looted and scattered. Construction of the current church, in the neo-Romanesque style inspired by the St Georges de Boscherville abbey, began in 1854. Inaugurated on March 31, 1855, it was not fully completed until 1861. On July 27, 1944, a V1 fell on the city, causing extensive damage; in particular he destroyed all the stained-glass windows in the church except the six which are today in the chapels of the Blessed Virgin and of St Joseph. For the restoration, completed on January 27, 1947, 79 glass roofs had to be replaced. -------- Saint-Martin Wall Sculpture: stone bas-relief above the north entrance of the church. Located in front of La Bienvenue. Work of sculptor Henri-Frédéric Iselin, Bust in reconstituted stone on a brick pedestal.
