Only open on Wednesdays? Are you kidding me? Aren't most guests visiting Strasbourg on weekends? Unbelievable!

Tucked away within Strasbourg's university campus on the first floor above the entrance of the institute of geology is the city's charming museum of mineralogy. Housed in a fin-de-siècle building is a collection mostly brought together over the second half of the nineteenth century, displayed in a manner that has remained much the same since its inception. The exhibit comprises both local and international (European) minerals, antique scientific instruments, models of crystalline structures, few fossils, and a couple of maps, laid out over two rooms and a gallery. Entrance is free, but only available a half day a week on Wednesday afternoon. Due to the small size and old-fashioned presentation, the museum is not necessarily suited to young children, though the collection has plenty to offer to those with an interest in minerals; fossils are unfortunately mostly lacking due to space and budgetary constraints. Possibly the museum's greatest attraction, however, lies exactly with its style of presentation, which appears to have remained frozen in time and forms a charming reminder of how collections were once displayed by museums the world over. As such, the Museum of Mineralogy offers more than just the geological samples it houses in its beautiful antique wooden cabinets, it also offers a glimpse into the history of museology! Definitely worth a visit!
