We passed by after visiting Shakespeare and Company, and one of their gorgeous opera prints caught my mom’s eye. She wanted to go in to look, and I vowed I wouldn’t purchase anything. The print was way out of my mom’s price range, so the woman working there immediately pulled out some portfolios of similar yet less expensive old advertisements for my mom to peruse, though I think it was obvious we were just being tourists. As I waited, my own eye was caught by some gorgeous Japanese woodblock prints. I finally decided I could afford one of them, and was trying to decide between two priced €170 and €120, when the woman said, “why choose?” She let me have both for €210. Now I have to explain it to my fiancée. (The woman wrapped up the prints very nicely in cardboard and kraft paper, and let me know they also have an eBay store. She was charming, knowledgeable, and passionate about the ephemera.)
