Acton Tindal who was born in 1811 and died in 1880 was Clerk of the Peace for the County of Buckinghamshire from 1838 until he died. In 1849 following the spectacular bankruptcy of the Duke of Buckingham Acton Tindal bought the right to become Lord of the Manor of Aylesbury with its appurtenances and to mark the occasion he made a present of a public clock to the town of Aylesbury. This clock was erected on the tower of the Market House which was demolished some years later when the present Clock Tower was constructed. The foundation stone for the New Clock Tower was laid by Mrs Acton Tindal on 11th July 1876 and this stone can be seen at at the base of the tower today.
