Cool happy to study there
I really liked the 2 Year 3D Animation Course I did back in 2015 and while there are some negatives, for me, they were far outweighed by the positive support I received from the majority of the tutors teaching the syllabus.
I'll start with the positives:
Amil, the Head Tutor of the course, is one of the most passionate teachers I've ever had in my life; full stop. He actually takes the time to listen to his students and get to know them so that he can help them in a way that works, FOR THEM (providing you give him a chance and let him in, of course!).
This sort of support throughout the 2 years (including my Final Major Project in the end) helped me to open up and expand my skills not only as an artist in both 2D & 3D, but also as a person too; not a lot of teachers I've had can put a claim on being able to do that...
The guest lecturers that we used to have too, Roger (Story-boarding & Cartooning) and Kitty (Anatomy & Acting), both made me feel comfortable to be curious, ask questions about things and made me enjoy learning.
The negatives are this...:
Whilst I was there, I had the displeasure of being lectured by a man named Dan Lavi; thankfully, he's not at SAE anymore. He didn't really seem to care about his students too much.
So much so, that when it came to my Final Major Project and I was assigned him as a mentor, he put doubt in my mind and tried to change what I should do. Even when I told him I was set on adapting one of my 2D characters to 3D.
Every lecture I had with him numbed my mind and made me want to leave (I actually did half-way through one day, much to his disappointment; as if I cared though. I got more work done at home that evening than I would have done that WHOLE DAY.)
His only redeeming quality; he was a good clay sculpting/anatomy teacher.
Senior management has... too many problems to name...! I'll just narrow it down to the fact that they could really benefit from a course in, "How To Listen To Feedback and Make Changes For The Better".
If there's anything to take away from this; My experience was good because I had excellent tutors. If you're in doubt, stick by the tutors that spend as much time listening to you as they do teaching you. Ask them as many questions as you can, that's why they're there with you.
Did a 2 year course in video game animation, course provided me with the tools and skills to be industry ready with out the nonsense university gimmicks. The teachers on campus have true passion for teaching and proved to go above and beyond to provide the tools to guarantee the success of students.
The campus itself is rather small but extremely well equipped with industry spec machines and up to date software to provide you with expireince in relavent tools used by artists, musicians and Web designers in this current era. SAE London is a one of the greatest places to find your passion.
I completed the Music Production & Song writing short course last year, I'm so glad I made the commitment, the facilities are great and still feeling exceptionally lucky to have had Marco Caricola as our tutor. Such an infectious mix of knowledge, passion, encouragement, humour and most of all breaking down those learning barriers, Yes I have my home studio now, yes I can use automation and sidechain properly! Hahaha. Seriously though, Marco is an absolute gem! Thank you for the journey.
Amil was by far the nicest, knowledgeable and most fun person I've spoken to, and to have him teach me on the animation course was more than a delight, he made every day interesting and was always there if you needed help with anything, in class our outside of it 😊
