Good food, though a little expensive. Slow service.

One of those places you can walk in on an average day and be told they are fully booked yet there will be several empty tables around. Been several times and the service is always really slow. A shame because the food is nice, hence my return visits. They just need better organisation. They barely ever answer the phone either.

For National Teddy Bear Day, Mummy took me here for brunch. I was surprised when mummy was simply be told to take any single table, rather than being walked over to a table. Perhaps it was due to social distancing. Despite being a touch under-heated our Coconut, red lentil & black eye bean curry with scrambled egg, coconut yogurt, crispy spring onion pancakes, black sesame seeds was a little above acceptable; It was made better with a squeeze of lime and was pleasant as a result. If you don’t like butterbeans then you would be disappointed to find them instead of the listed black-eyed beans. Fortunately for mummy, she prefers butter beans to black-eyed beans. I was less happy, as I find butter beans to a bit too fuzzy in texture, Teddy bears don’t do fuzzy food! There were a few red lentils amid the unlisted green, but let’s not split furs. The pancakes were not pan-cakes at all. They were more a cross between reheated dried-up puri and chapatti but acted well as a scoop for the very mild curry. The scrambled egg was of suitable texture for the dish (well-formed but still soft). Had it been scrambled egg on toast it would have been a little overcooked for our taste (we like it almost runny on toast). Portion size was not too great but presentation made up for it. It took a couple of minutes to attract attention when mummy had dropped her knife and asked for another on. The waitress just grabbed a set of cutlery from an empty table. I am not sure what to make of the waitress’s comment to Mummy when she took our bowl. She said ‘ You have demolished that’! Mummy had used the thing they call pan-cake to mop up the curry as she hadn’t been given a spoon. There was nothing to cut, and it is hard to pushy runny food onto a fork with a knife; so was the knife really necessary anyway? Would the waitress have made such a comment to someone that she perceived as posh. Or would she deem it would disrespectful? Lost a point for that. Mummy was disappointed as she had eaten here a few years ago and the service was very good and respectful then.
