One of my favorite woods. I lovely walk up on to the tops above Ramsbottom.

Very moody forest but beautiful. No where to park though , had to park in very steep bend on the main road :-(

Lovely stream running through the woods. Path could do with some improvement.

I have been going to Buckden wood for over 50 years and thanks to the National Trust it has hardly changed at all. It is too small to be considered a destination in its own right but takes some beating as a starting point for a walk onto the moors above. Bisected by Helmshore Road the upper part of the wood is mainly beech trees growing on each side of a valley with a small stream running through it. The smooth barked beech sit tall and elegant amid a deep carpet of bronze leaves and beech mast. The lower section of the wood is much more of a mixed woodland with plenty of holly crowding the banks of the stream. The path from the upper part of the wood leads out to the bridleway which runs from Helmshore to Holcombe which is a starting point for many fine walks over the open moorland. The easiest access to the wood is from Helmshore Road where there is a small lay by with space for about four cars.
