If you're wondering why percussionist Nick Mason has so many vintage sports cars sitting outside his little mansion, it's partly because I have bought Pink Floyd's Saucerful Of Secrets album so many times. In the late 80's Compact Discs were the disruptor format, you could scarcely give vinyl away, and people marvelled at the ability to hear a whole double album without getting up to change sides. Independents like Andy's Records went out of business, and for a while it looked like vinyl was for out-of-touch dads and Alan Partridge only. The canny record labels kept putting out new CD reissues of classic albums promising even better remastered sound or bonus tracks. So we dutifully upgraded and gave away our old copies. Then when cheap or free music streaming services threatened to curtail their revenue, the money people engineered a resurgence in vinyl reissues and suddenly it was CDs that were only largely good for charity shops or landfill. (Meanwhile non famous musicians like little me are expected to play for free as though our equipment and phone bills just fall out of the skies.) I now largely stream my tunes, but even today there are some artists (such as Kevin Ayers or the more obscure old school dub artists or rappers) who put out certain work you can only find in second hand physical formats. Beatniks are choosy about what they buy in, but have always given me a fair price for what they accept. And I have always found the albums I've bought are in excellent condition and priced reasonably, especially with their multibuy savings. I personally tend to occasionally buy from their excellent jazz range, but the usual genres including those marketed as 'alternative' (a meaningless label since any genre is an alternative to any other genre plus today's avant-garde is tomorrow's mainstream) are present and correct on both CD and vinyl. So whether you're into dad rock like Floyd or the Velvet Underground, jazz (like the original bebopping beatniks), world, dub and reggae, or the various genres deriving from hip hop, you're likely to find something to suit your tastes. You can also find pop culture ephemera including t-shirts, figures, and posters, though I tend to avoid those as I am likely to want to buy half the shop. Service is friendly and the overall vibe of Beatniks reminds me of the glory days of the independents. So if you're after a decent rummage and have Catholic tastes, then set the controls for the heart of St Benedict's Street...

Great little shop, knowledgeable and cool owner. Lots of stock and a wide range of genres in the vinyl section
