It was a birthday present, and i was made to feel very relaxed from the start. It was excellent fun, amazing to fly near the coast and over stately homes and Africa alive, i even got to control the plane for a time which was brill, such fantastic views and a real thrill. Im going to treat myself to another flight in the near future it was so enjoyable. Ide recommend it to anyone. Amazing !

I’ve always been fascinated with aircraft since being a young child. It was no surprise therefore that I’d choose a career with aircraft – but as an engineer. I’ve since spent a lot of time as a passenger in all manner of helicopters and a couple of fixed wing, but never really ‘got’ the beauty of flying, since for me it often involved sitting in some stuffy cabin, peering out of a small window, strapped in and very uncomfortable. So for me, this was all about seeing flying from a different perspective; for pleasure instead of business. I chose the flexi-wing GT450 for two reasons – the first being that it’s completely different to anything I’ve ever flown in before. The second, being that it’s about as open-cockpit as an aircraft can get, which means spectacular views you won’t get strapped into the back of a grubby oily Mk7 Army Lynx squashed in between 8 other passengers staring at the back of the pilot’s and commander’s helmets. The instructor Gary was great – with a similar engineering background to myself there was an instant understanding and within no time at all we were airborne. The first thing that surprised me was how much the aircraft appears to fly itself! At times there were just fingers resting on the bar, other times no hands at all! Naturally, I was offered the chance to put in a couple of steers as well as a climb and dive. For me, having spent 23 years around aircraft with traditional flying controls, this was a little too alien for me at the time. I found myself having to work out in my head which way it would go. Silly as it sounds, it’s almost like trying to learn a foreign language because initially you’re translating in your head first before you speak – rather than just instinctively turning like a seasoned pilot would. It’s fair to say I agree with the general rule of thumb, that the younger you are the easier you find it to learn. For the second take-off, I decided to remain in the rear seat and do some pleasure viewing. By now the thermals had developed a little giving us a little more of an interesting ride. But that’s the great thing about Gary – there’s no pressure and everything is at your own pace. On that basis, I’ve made a conscious decision to now have a crack in the Ikarus C-42 on my next lesson and decide which of the two aircraft I’d like to learn in. For the views it has to be the flexi-wing, but for what I’m used to (i.e. ailerons, rudders and elevators) I think maybe a traditional fixed wing might be more my style. Overall a hugely enjoyable experience and it is safe to say I will be back and raring to go again very soon, and ready to learn to fly …however long it takes!
