What to expect of an unfurnished house and it's gardens? Well a lot! At first the house is in a beautiful location. Surrounded by woods with a lovely stream in it, in front looking out to more open fields.
There is a water mill run by volunteers (not every day open), an orchard with a stunning amount of different varieties of apples, pears and other fruits, a herb garden and a sunken garden.
National Trust is restoring the house and there has to be done a lot. The place is more or less a building site, but the volunteer house tour guide had a very fascinating story to tell. So I was very glad that she let me join the tour even though I hadn't subscribed.
If you're into kitchen gardens and herbs this place will make your year - the gardens are both well stocked and gorgeous. House is nice, but nothing special on the inside, although there is a cool second hand bookshop inside. Nice little cafe and take time to walk through the woods to working watermill where they mill their own flour. Lovely place to get away from it all with outstanding views over the Eden Valley.
Excellent. Our guide was brilliant. Gave a detailed history of the house from earliest times to the most recent. Was able to answer questions as we went round the property without losing his flow. Will be returning to the house as we were told further restoration is ongoing and there will be more to see as time unfolds. House has a great history.
Good place but limited things to see in Winter. Would have scored lower but staff were great.
Visited today on our last day of our holiday. Quite disappointing really. Paid £22 for a family of 4. We did the pumpkin trail but felt more effort could have been put into the trail. Both young children lost interest. Advertised as a spooky woods trail? There was nothing spooky about it! I personally would not recommend Acorn Bank for families with young children. There are far better places in the area that are value for money.
