Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre, Campbell Dr, Barrow Hill, Chesterfield S43 2PR, England was an operational former Midland Railway roundhouse until 1948. Some years after closure, the building was Grade II listed by the Department of the Environment in 1991. Following negotiations with the British Railways Property Board, Chesterfield Borough Council became the new owners of the shed and nearby yard in 1996. The site was refurbished and reopened to the public in July 1998 as as a railway heritage centre and the home to many preserved British railway locomotives. They've also created a secondary revenue-stream for themselves through hiring out the venue for beer festivals and music events.

Grest place for train enthusiasts to explore especially with their children. Lots of local and regional history focused on railways, an amazing selection of well preserved trains from steam and diesel eras, and a wonderful working train to experience! The driver was very friendly and happy to share his knowledge with us. The cafe is small and slightly amateurish but the whole place is run by volunteers and the food and drink was tasty.

Great place to visit if you have an interest in history, the railways or even engineering. Prices are very cheap and the volunteers knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Looking forward to the beer festival this year. Only reason it had a star knocked off was the food in the cafe was a bit hit and miss, other than that, a local gem!

This is one of a kind. A shed containing a fully functional locomotive turntable. Also fascinating museum exhibits. Took my Father in law as he remembers steam and early diesel first time round. Brilliant to photograph as the light shines through the skylights making for atmospheric shots. Recommended.
