Lovely park amenity in the centre of Ottery, in the open triangle of land between Canaan Way, Mill Street and the Mill Stream, adjacent to the Canaan publuc car park. No one really knows why its called the Land of Canaan, but a campaign was started to in the late 1800s to acquire the land, owned by Lord Coleridge, as a public space, and the area was finally acquired by the Devon County Council and ceded as a public space and car park in the 1970s.
There are several park benches and a small kids playground with swings and climbing frames. Extracts from Coleridge's epic poem 'Kubla Khan', 1797, are engraved into the stone edging of the main pathway, and there are a couple of information boards dotted around.
The area is well kept and planted - it is not over fussy nor is it a flower garden - but it features several impressive mature trees. The Mill Stream is picturesque, and the path leads to the famous Tumbling Weir.
Part of Ottery's flood defence system passes through the area, with the main culvert actually running underneath the Mill Stream. A new path starting at the Mill Stream Bridge links the Land of Canaan to the nearby Coleridge Bridge over the River Otter.
