A couple of days before Christmas. Overcast and quite cold. So not the best time to visit any NT property !! Nevertheless my wife and I enjoyed the walk round the trail and the lights and Christmas trees. We want to visit again in Summer to appreciate the grounds and go in the house.
Walked around the grounds for the first time and was staggered how beautiful it was, particularly on a child crisp sunny autumn day.
I saw l visited the house itself many years ago and loved its quirky presentation with its obsessional clutter being preserved in contrast to the manicured grandeur of most National Trust properties.
A great National Trust property. The house is fascinating inside and kept as close to ours Original state as possible which really makes you feel you're going back in time.
The grounds have plenty of walks and gardens to explore with some of the original old buildings and gardeners tunnels and an ice house.
Several events are held per year that are worth visiting, such as Christmas when they light up the gardens and Easter with the hints. They often hold indoor markets.
There's a cafe near the entrance assuming snacks and drinks and a larger indoor cafe with an increased range of food and drink and outdoor seating.
There's also a new 'explorer' area with a few walls and trails as you drive in.
Overall a fantastic property with stunning gardens.
It's a lovely place with gardens, lakes and lots of walks. Tea shop open and toilets as well. The NT goes to great lengths to keep you safe and it feels good.
I'm probably unfairly comparing it to other NT properties I've visited over the last few weeks, of which we are unable to enter all currently. The deer were not as free to roam as other venues have been and the maps were not particularly clear in my opinion compared to others, it would be benefitial to include information about inclines to help with people who are there for exercise on the maps too but may not be able to deal with inclines as well, nonetheless, we had a nice wander and enjoyed the visit.
