St Mary's Church in Pilleth is a site with early Celtic Christian origins. Pilgrimages were made to the holy well immediately north of the church, famed for its healing properties. The current church is largely 13th century but it has a rich and bloody past. The Battle of Bryn Glas, on the 22nd June 1402, was fought on the steep slopes of the hill around the church between the new Prince of Wales Owain Glyndwr and Sir Edmund Mortimer. Although Glyndwr faced a well armed, well organized army of around 2000 strong, he forced the English to fight up the steep slopes and won. The Welsh victory prolonged the War of Independence and Glyndwr's force went on sack Leominster. The Battle of Pilleth is mentioned in Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part I. There are debated historical sources of the Glyndwr's female camp followers butchering and mutilating the fallen English soldiers. Remains of the fallen do surface occasionally. A stand of four wellingtonia trees were planted on one such mass grave discovered in the 19th century. The church was severely damaged in the battle, and again by fire in 1894. An extensive restoration took place in 2002 to save the roof and return the church to working order.

The Battle of Bryn Glas, (sometimes referred to in English accounts as the Battle of Pilleth, although Bryn Glas translates as green or blue hill) was fought on 22 June 1402, near the towns of Knighton and Presteigne in Powys. It was a great victory for the Welsh rebels under Owain Glyndŵr, and it resulted in the prolongation of the Welsh rebellion and the destabilisation ofEnglish politics for several years afterwards.
