Colibri Hill Resort

Nice place with air conditioning. The swimming pool was sufficient. Friendly people and all was good for a hotel (not sure where the name resort comes from).

Our interaction with Colibri Hill left us feeling scammed. When booking accommodations in advance and actually having talked over the phone to the owner to confirm availability, it's an amazingly bad situation to have them contact you at the last minute, precisely one week before you leave, to say that they've cancelled your reservation because they've sold their business. A piece of advice when booking a place to stay on Utila: do so a good 4-5 months in advance to ensure you get a solid place to stay of your choosing. This is what we thought we had done here. If you leave it to chance and try to do so a week beforehand, you'll be left with nothing but the most expensive of options to stay near the hub of the island (where Colibri Hill is), otherwise you'll be far away from where things are actually happening with places to eat at, shops to stroll through and dive centers to walk to. This was the situation Colibri Hill left us in as they made it impossible for us to find another desirable place with a price in our budget at the last minute. We're staying at a fantastic dive resort now, however paid way above what we were hoping to spend on accommodations by about $1200 CAD, along with Colibri Hill costing an extra $200 CAD because transactions for booking there are done through PayPal (who charge a fee for use of their service). So, when we got our refund back, the whole situation, with having our reservations cancelled on us and all the ensuing panic, ended up costing us a further $200 more. They did, however, offer another accommodation that they own and said we'd pay the same price...at a place with no A/C and none of the amenities Colibri Hill is supposed to have. I also checked their website for this other place, which quoted a price at about 1/2 the cost they would have had us pay, so it genuinely sounded like they were trying to scam us. At the end of the day, we're here on Utila now having a fantastic time and washing our hands of the affair with Colibri Hill while we threw a lot of money at the situation they caused to just make it go away.

Think twice about staying here! Had a couple of good friends stay here (they are currently in Honduras) and were shorted $200 on their deposit. How dishonest.

My friends are in Honduras right now and this property cancelled their reservation with almost no notice and shortchanged their deposit by $200. Extremely unprofessional and practice. Stay away!

Very friendly staff. Nice little pool and bar to kick back at. Delicious free breakfast in am. Air-conditioned. Nice views from top deck. Substantial discount for cash payment. Credit card machine not working anyway, while we were here.
