SO YOU ONLY HAVE 1 DAY TO SPEND ON ROATAN? Let me introduce you to Kerwin & Charleston. The lively cousins, owners & 4th generation Roatanians. Yes, I said Roatanians. Private tours for 1 to 8 people. I did my homework prior to visiting Roatan for the first time. Which in part means contacting several private tour companies. If you’re on a cruise ship with tons of people for several days, nothing sounds better than a private tour! Been there done that. After contacting several private tour companies, I picked Roatan Island Style Tours. I tend to get a bit jittery when visiting a new destination and not knowing what to expect. I had so many questions about touring the island. Kerwin was lightning fast at getting back with answers to my many many questions. You immediately knew customer service was a priority. He even followed up with me a couple days before the tour so I was assured we had not been forgotten. Their pricing is excellent for a full day tour. So pick what you want to do!! If you don’t know what to do, tell them your interests and they will cater your tour to that. Snorkeling, paddle boarding, scuba, fishing, mangroves, swimming with dolphins etc. The cool thing is Roatan is a small island and these two know pretty much everyone on it. They are fluent in English, Spanish & Caribbean English. Being 4th generation they have vivid & entertaining stories about their family heritage, lore and places on the island. They were extremely patient when taking us to the most touristy places as we stopped to take photos or mini tours. We even made them participate in many road side photo ops. There was no rush ever! Another thing I would like to hone in on is how we felt comfortable right away with them. They are so personable & funny. They were there to pick us up ahead of time with their clean, comfortable SUV. Here are some of the many highlights we did on our tour: • Toured West End & the Roatan Chocolate Factory (yum). They also pointed out favorite restaurants along the strip. • Roatan Rum Company – Free rum samples and a gorgeous patio overlooking the island. There is also an old light house across the street. • West bay – Just to see some of the high-end hotels, beaches & homes of Key Hole • Oldest church on Roatan in Flowers Bay – ran into a local there and got to hear Charleston speak Caribbean English. Very cool but didn’t understand a word (he explained later). • The famous colorful Roatan sign & the multi-hued town of Coxen Hole. Charleston spoke to one of the locals so we could get the beautiful photo of him with his fruit cart. • Dixons Cove – Ship wreck photos • Daniel Johnson’s Monkey & Sloth Hang Out – OMG bucket list! Got to hold a sloth!!! This is a rehab center for monkeys, sloths & parrots. Very educational. I got to hold a sloth!!!!! • Roatan Island Brewing – Kerwin worked there years ago. Talk about insider info. We met one of the owners LLias. He is a very chill with a killer welcoming smile. Seriously! A brewery in the middle of the jungle. They have games set out like cornhole (bags) & ping pong. Lucky us, the BBQ was working hard. We got the sampler beers & their nachos. Ok two nachos. So good. This is a place where you are going to want to spend a little time to decompress. By this time it felt like we were long time friends just chattin it up. Charleston is an excellent fisherman and was telling us about fishing around the island. You have got to hear some of his stories. • Last we needed to get some supplies (grocery items). Kerwin went into the grocery store & helped us shop. It was our first full day on the island so we were not quite acclimated to the currency yet. Thanks again Kerwin!! That’s pretty much what we had planned for our first time on Roatan. We hope to go back again next year and have already told Kerwin & Charleston other things we hope to do and see next time. I’m sure they will have other fun ideas for things we need to experience as well. Until then fellas. Thanks again!!
