4.5 stars - Highly Recommended - As an American, it was my first time in Đakovo. My wife and I visited Loora on the recommendation of local hotel staff. It was the last Friday night of an unseasonably warm January, 2020. The young waiter, Rafael, showed us to the most popular seats in the house. Turns out that Rafael is part owner of the Bistro. He speaks fluent English. (And word has it that he's quite the free-style futballer!) He gladly helped us navigate our menus in light of some of my dietary restrictions and otherwise assured us that the cooks would take care to any special orders. I ordered the omelet hour d'oeuvre - sans fromage. (I was curious - having never before seen an omelet listed on an hour d'oeuvre menu.) This would be followed by the tomato & basil soup, a mixed salad, the filet mignon - medium rare - and baked potato wedges as a side dish. My wife also ordered the "biftek", but ordered hers well-done. (I know! I know! But she doesn't like the cow mooing at her when she eats it! AND they didn't have the T-bone. In fact, we were a bit disappointed to find that while the T-bone, the Tomahawk and a few other premium beef cuts were listed on the menu, only the filet and ribeye were regularly available. Standard for Croatia. These other premium cuts could only be ordered a day in advance. It makes sense, of course - because it's Đakovo and not Los Angeles - yet, to see these cuts listed - the first time in 21 years of living in Croatia that I've ever seen them grace the SAME menu - only to then be told that I could only get them by ordering a day in advance ... well that was a little disappointing.) The tomato soup gets a 9/10 - but only because the bowl was too small! I'd certainly order it again! The omelet was tasty. (Would have been even better with the cheese that I can't eat!) But, in the end it was just an omelet. As such, to me it seemed odd and out of place dinner item. (Maybe its a French thing?) The mixed salad arrived next - just before our main course. Unlike Americans, Europeans/Croats usually eat their salads before the main course, not alongside it. So in the lag-time before our steaks arrived my wife and I dipped into the salad. Our taste buds did a happy dance! Not the standard oil & vinegar dressing ubiquitously served throughout this region. The house dressing surprised us. Unique and delicious! It made the salad worthy of mention! (And how often does a side salad get mentioned in Croatian restaurant reviews?!) Then the steaks arrived. Generous portions - 260 grams. Mine was cooked perfectly. A local Cabernet paired well. The wedge potatoes were nothing special. Standard restaurant fare. (Which is to say that Rafael's ex-girlfriend, Loora, could've learned a few different ways to prepare/serve a potato: whole baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, maybe even baked sweet potatoes ("batat")? Anything left over at the end of the night could be prepared as potato salads or chowders for the lunch menu on the following day.) My wife's filet, unfortunately, was undercooked. And inasmuch as Rafael wanted to take the blame for this, I actually blame her! (Who orders a filet "well-done"?) After dinner, Rafael suggested their chocolate cake a la mode. I can't eat dairy, but I ordered it for my wife. (I'd noticed her gettin a bit skinny about the hips lately.) It was something of a chocolate mousse pie, topped by a scoop of vanilla ice-cream, sprinkled with chocolate powder and drizzled with raspberry sauce. My wife said it was tasty. Couple of tips for Loora that would have earned that extra half-star from us: 1) name tags and introductions from wait staff: "Good evening! My name is ...", 2) don't allow wait staff to let any customer's glass go empty - be they glasses of water or wine (especially wine)! 3) find creative/unique potato options, 4) work with local butchers and fish-mongers to make your whole menu available each nite, 5) nail that well-done steak temp - even if it goes against the cook's conscience, 6) a welcoming brandy "on the house" goes a long way! See you in Samobor, Rafael!
