According to the legend, St John of Povlja was a medieval Benedictine monk who casted out plague from the settlement thus saving its inhabitants from the terrrible fate. He also cared for the poor and the needy and was supposedly able to walk on water earning him an aura of sanctity among local people. After his death, he was buried by his grateful fellow villagers in the Church of St John the Baptist in Povlja from where his remains were taken by the invading Venetians, eventually ending up in one of Venice's churches. The impressive monument of St John in the centre of Povlja was made by a local naive artist from the world-famous white Brač marble.
