Pile Gate, Dubrovnik

Pile Gate is the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s old town and is situated on its western wall. Built in 1537, the bridge used to have a wooden drawbridge that would be pulled up every night to prevent unauthorised visitors to the walled city. However, many years ago the drawbridge was turned into a stone bridge that leads the visitors through a renaissance arch into the old city. As you walk through the gates, admiring the stonewalls and soaking in the music playing by the Stonebridge, be prepared to step back in time as you walk in and are greeted by the gorgeous Stradun or promenade. You’re sure to get a feeling of deja vu as you approach the gates for you would have definitely seen them as part of ‘The King’s Landing’ in the popular contemporary series Game of Thrones.

The Walls of Dubrovnik are a series of defensive stone walls surrounding the city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia. If you are Game of Thrones fan you will like this place more and can relate the scenes of Kings landing.

Gorgeous entrance to the city, but be prepared for the traffic jam if you’re visiting in summer. The number of people trying to walk in and out is staggering, especially with the tour groups often stopping and blocking the way. You must be patient while making your way through the crowd

Pile Gate is the East entrance to the old town of Dubrovnik. This is certainly the busier and more commonly used of the two. Where once used to be water is now a play arra for kids on the outside. This is also a common meeting place for tour guides.
