Ivor Lapić (02/28/2018)
From the first verses (Vinodolski dolče, da si zdravo!) Which he wrote as a 16-year-old high school student in Rijeka as a greeting to his homeland, he dealt with various lyrical problems: clarifying metrical problems related to Croatian language expression, Virgil epic, especially the relationship between history and poetry. In "Danica", from the very beginning, he was one of the most notable and expressive poets, and as a man unusually clever, thorough education and broad views, the revival movement understood deeper than many, in the full totality of cultural and political intentions and nuances. As a linguist, he created the first truly modern Croatian dictionary. Together with Josip Užarević, in 1842 he published a Croatian-German dictionary (German-Illyrian dictionary) with 40,000 words in which, in addition to receiving older terminology from the dictionaries of Mikalja and Stulli, he devised many new words. In order to translate certain German terms, he coined Croatian terms for many areas of urban civilization and thus paved the way for Bogoslav Šulek. For example, Mažuranić is the father of the words accounting, rhino, ice cream, high treason, metropolis or the term market economy. Already in the opening verses it shows a special originality. Wanting to test the strength and possibility of the Croatian language, he tries to apply different poetic forms and styles to poetry: elements of the classical meter (Sapphire stanza, elegiac distich), writes verses that are often born, formally and substantively, for folk songs, and tried troubadour poetry. His poetic reputation was already so indisputable at that time, that the newly founded Matica ilirska chose him to write XIV for its first, inaugural edition. and XV. singing Gundulić's great epic. Three poets tried their hand at the job before him: Pjerko Sorkočević, Marin Zlatarić and one who did not sign; after him, no one even tried to surpass Ivan Mažuranić: so much of his supplement merged with the whole of Gundulić's work. Osman's supplement presented Mažuranić as an erudite and strong artistic potential. He managed to get along with the text, adopting Gundulić's style, language and expression as a whole, but here he expresses some original Croatian conciseness, metaphor and reflection that we see in his poem The Death of Smile-aga Čengić.
