Silver Gate

The Silver Gate is one of the old accesses to the Diocletian's Palace in Split. Today it opens up to a food market, and it is a widely used entrance today. It is one of the striking elements within the palace complex.

The Eastern or Silver gate situated between the market and the Cathedral. This eastern gate still has a lot of the surrounding wall style remaing around. This is quintessential old town Split.

As everything in this city, it’s incredibly beautiful how they have merged this adchitecture with the new ones.

When you enter through them you have to imagine how it was in olden times of Roman empire when this was magnificent palace and then almost permanently used through the centuries with short break during collapse of western part of Roman empire.

I'm glad to made this site on G Maps. In the Middle Ages known as Porta argentea (Silver Gate) the East Gate of Diocletian's Palace (Porta orientalis) led the old way towards the ancient settlement of Illyrian-Greek Epetion or Epetium in the Roman times. It it todays Stobreč.
