It was created around 1500, above the abyss of the river Dobra - Đula's abyss. The founder of the city was Bernardin Frankopan, one of the most powerful nobles of his time, the feudal lord of Modruš, Plaški, Vitunj, Tounj, Zvečaj, Bosiljevo, Novigrad and Dubovac, he had this castle built. At that time he was one of the most powerful people in Croatia, a nobleman, military leader, diplomat and patron, a member of the family of Frankopan princes as a powerful and respected aristocrat, he was the bearer of the struggle for survival of the Croatian people in areas threatened by Turkish invasion. The castle played a major role in the development of present-day Ogulin. According to its content, it belongs to the type of a Renaissance castle. The city walls bounded the courtyard on three sides, and on the fourth is the palace - a three-story building on the edges of which are towers. The military significance and position of the town of Ogulin required a well-fortified fortress. Today, the Homeland Museum was opened in that building in 1967. It has several collections: archeological, ethnographic, old weapons, a memorial room of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, mountaineering and alpinism, and an exhibition of the academic painter Stjepan Galetić from Ogulin.
