After several weeks of searching, I found the store from the other end of the country, the only store that stood up to the problem by dealing with it on the merits and offering a reassuring solution in case the ordered sofa would not fit on the door of our apartment. The furniture arrived much earlier than the expected delivery time, everything was fine with it and just that, but it fit through the door.
