Esztergom Id. Ernő Rubik Airport (ICAO: LHEM) is a grassy airport in the northern part of Esztergom-Kertváros, next to the main road 111. It is mainly used for sports purposes, parachutists and gliders come from all over the country. The airport also offers glider training on Gobé-type aircraft, as well as passenger and glider passenger flying. Ernő Rubik's older aircraft factory operated here. Esztergom is one of the cities with the longest history of Hungarian aviation. Before World War I, today's airport was still worthless agricultural land, so military exercises were held there. In 1911, during the exercise of the 5th Corps, four Etrich Taube aircraft and with them four hangar lines were brought to the airport. After the World War and the Treaty of Trianon, the Hungarian aircraft industry ceased to exist. In 1929, thanks to the decision of the parish priest of Szentgyörgymez, Aurél Madaras, non-motorized flying started in the city. In the year 1932, due to the general obligation to defend, the demand for well-trained pilots increased. This year, after several attempts, he founded the Esztergom Section of MOVERO Sport Airplanes with carpenter Aurajos Mitter Lajos Mitter, who also repaired and built aircraft since 1936, with financial support from the Hungarian Aero Club. In 1933, there were 19 similar associations in Hungary. By this time, 35 pilot students had been studying at the training center in Esztergom.
